Joseph Proulx Obituary

Joseph Lawrence Proulx, known affectionately as Pitt, passed away unexpectedly on April 7, 2024, at his home.  Born on May 6, 1940, in Chazy NY, to Emile and Adele (Landry) Proulx. Joseph was a lifelong resident of Coopersville and Rouses Point and a pillar of the communities he so dearly loved.

Joseph was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, class of 1958.  In 1959, he entered the United States Air Force and served until 1963. He went on to the Army National Guard and Army reserve where he served from 1981 to 2000. Joseph worked for G&G Tire, early in life and again after retirement, Grand Union, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for over twenty years, and was an electrician for many years. He was a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus member.  He played a pivotal role in the American Legion Post 912 serving for forty-four years, ten years of that was 1st Vice Commander, he was also the 1st Vice Commander for the Clinton County American Legion.  He was a driving force behind the American Legion Turkey Raffle and selling Super Bowl Tickets for the Knights of Columbus.

‍In 1965, Joseph married his beloved wife, Sandra, in a beautiful ceremony at St. Mary’s Church in Champlain NY. Together, they raised two children: Joey and Melissa. Joseph was a devoted father, grandfather, and community oriented legion member.  He was the “Pitbull” of the American Legion known for his ability to get 100% membership for ten years in a row. He served as treasurer of the American Legion for several terms. He was a member of the Rouses Point Fire Department for fourteen years, served as an EMT for nine years and served as treasurer there for several terms. Joseph was a North Country Honor Flight Chaperone, which he was very proud of participating in.

Joseph’s favorite hobby, in the spare time he had, was playing golf as he was a member of the North Country Golf Club. In his later years, you could find him taking frequent walks around town having conversations with those he met along the way. He loved his family and the Community of Rouses Point dearly.

‍Sadly, Joseph was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Sandra, his sisters Mary and Pauline Proulx, his brothers, Roger, Francis, and Albert. His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: his companion Shirley Bechard; his children, Joey, Melissa (Glen) LaVenture; his grandchildren, Katie (Brent) Stein, Ashley and fiancé Austin Gonyo; his sister Jeanne Bechard and sister-in-law Irene Proulx; and many nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held on April 11, 2024, at 11:00am at St Patrick’s Church, Rouses Point.  Following the service, Joseph will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Champlain.

In lieu of flowers, his family kindly requests donations be made to the Rouses Point Fire Department.

‍Joseph Lawrence Proulx will be remembered as a loving companion, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His legacy will live on in his community he so deeply loved and in the hearts of all those who knew him.
