Richard E. Dashnaw Sr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard E. Dashnaw Sr., who departed this life on February 24, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on December 27, 1956, in Malone, NY, Richard lived a life full of joy, dedication, and service, calling Lyon Mountain, NY, his beloved home.

Richard was a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was the proud father of Richard Jr. and Brandi Besaw (Robert), and a loving grandfather to Kalie and Thomas Dashnaw, along with Gracie and Lily Besaw. He is also survived by his significant other, Mary Benware, brothers, Ernest and Rex Dashnaw (Lynn), and his sister, Debra Garsow (Joseph). His family remembers him as a kind-hearted and humble individual, known for his sense of humor and a spirit of generosity.

A hardworking man, Richard found fulfillment in his role as an operator for the Town of Dannemora Highway Department, where he was respected and admired for his skills. A jack of all trades, he was also an accomplished mechanic and a reliable friend who cared for those around him. In addition, Richard dedicated time to his community, serving as a volunteer firefighter for the Lyon Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, exemplifying his commitment to the welfare of others.

Richard's passions included riding four-wheelers, hunting, and fishing. He had a deep love for baseball, especially his beloved New York Yankees. Throughout his life, he created countless fond memories with family and friends, often through joyous gatherings centered on activities he passionately enjoyed.

A funeral service to honor Richard's life will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain. We invite all who knew and loved him to join us in commemorating a remarkable man whose presence made a difference in the lives of many. A Celebration of Life will be held after the service at the American Legion.

Richard E. Dashnaw Sr. will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness and laughter will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Geraldine Dashnaw; he is reunited with his wife, Laurie Dashnaw; his brother, Leonard Dashnaw; sister, Wanda Whitney; and dear friend, Tony Benware.
